Oaxaca, a city of immense ecological and cultural richness, is a key site for conservation, home to abundant biodiversity and numerous endemic species. Beyond its environmental value, it embodies social resilience, with 21,931 indigenous people—8.09% of the population—representing 16 distinct indigenous groups.

Situated in the Núcleo Agrario San Felipe del Agua, a community-managed area in the upper San Felipe River basin, the project collaborates with 120 families to oversee 1,659 ha of protected land. Known as “the lung of the city,” this site lies between Benito Juárez National Park and Oaxaca City’s expanding urban fabric, balancing development and conservation while providing essential natural resources and ecosystem services.

This preservation model integrates Indigenous and contemporary cosmovisions of water, aligning with authors like Lefebvre, Lynch, and Hernández in recognizing its spatial, cultural, and ecological significance. It fosters a communal space where human activities and biodiversity coexist.The project reclaims Oaxaca’s riparian edges, transforming them into multifunctional educational spaces.

By protecting water resources, it envisions the San Felipe River as a hub for learning, innovation, and heritage. The Water Intelligence Hub will demonstrate how communal lands can safeguard water and biodiversity while promoting stewardship, ensuring water preservation remains deeply connected to cultural identity and community action.
